4th Generation Funeral Directors Arthur Peake & Sons Funeral Service was established in 1918 by Ernest “Arthur” Peake a well known and respected builder and undertaker, firstly setting up at “Sunnyside” Croesyceiliog then moving round the corner to the family home Durban House, Woodland Road where the business has remained, in those days the front room was given up for viewing the deceased with very few purpose funeral homes existing.

After Arthur’s death aged only 54 his only son Arthur and wife Margaret carried the business forward, like his father Arthur was a perfectionist his carpentry was a fine example of this with families many years later praising his workmanship and attention to detail, following poor health Arthur decided to concentrate on the funeral side of the business and gave up all building work.

Cwmbran was now becoming a fast growing New Town and this was a great opportunity for the business to grow with the ever expanding town, plans were drawn to build a purpose built funeral home adjacent to the family home but sadly Arthur died on 18th August 1963, aged 45 leaving his widow Margaret and six children to manage the business. It was Arthur aged 18 and Donald aged 15 with tremendous support from their mother and of course all the community of Cwmbran who arranged and conducted funerals in the dignified and respectful way for their father and grandfather had in the past.

After a short time Arthur left to pursue a different career while Donald carried on running the funeral business alongside a private car hire business.

It was in 1974 Donald decided to concentrate solely on the funeral business and became the sole proprietor with the help and support of his wife Joan.

1974 also saw the start of the new funeral home with a small budget, Donald and close friend “Jacker” Gardner set about building this with Donald labouring in between funerals.

1976 Donald’s brother Alun joined the family business straight from school and now manages the mortuary and workshop.

1977 Cwmbran’s only purpose built funeral home was completed with friends and local clergy attending the dedication, the funeral home now provided rest rooms, a service chapel and office to make arrangements, with these new facilities it was not long before business increased and Donald was able to purchase his first new hearse and from this time forward we were no longer front room undertakers, but a name you associated with Quality & Respect.

1981 saw the need to build a new garage block and workshop to accommodate the ever-growing cortege comprising of a Ford hearse and limousines.

1996 Donald’s son Kerrie joined the firm after a short spell working with a well respected funeral directors in Surrey and now arranges and conducts funerals alongside his father, 1996 was also the year the fleet were changed to Mercedes which set the benchmark, we have continued to replace our fleet every few years.

2010 A further office was built.

2012 following the death of close friend and funeral director Mr Lyndon Bassett of Newport we were extremely honoured to be asked by his sister Connie to take over and manage the business as she felt no one else would care for the families of Newport as they had.

2012 Present Day

Arthur Peake & Sons now conduct over 300 funerals per year and whilst modern times demand modern ways, our service and respect to you remain as traditional as when we began with all arrangements personally carried out by Don or Kerrie.

We are very proud of our facilities and believe this has been achieved by employing the best of staff who has stayed with us for many years, hard work, continual investment and providing a quality service at a sensible cost and above all treating families the way we would like to be treated.

1993 work started on a new workshop, fully equipped mortuary and office block.
